Areas of Interest: 

1. Genetic improvement of Luffah i.e. sponge gourd (Luffa cylindrica (Roem) L.), ridge gourd (Luffa acutangula (L.Roxb.) and satputia (Luffa hermaphodita).

2. Coordinating and monitoring of  breeder seed production programme and other related works of Project Coordinating Cell under AICRP on Vegetable Crops and involved in seed production of vegetables seeds at the Institute level.

Major Research Accomplishments: 
  • Developed 14 vegetable varieties/hybrids (04 in Sponge Gourd, 03 in Bottle Gourd, 02 in Tomato, 01 each in Ridge gourd, Pointed Gourd, Bitter Gourd, long melon & Pumpkin.  Out of these, 05 varieties/hybrids were identified and released for cultivation in different agro climatic condition at National level and 9 at U.P. State level.
  • First record of melon weevil (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) from ridge and sponge gourd in the world from India and its bionomics, diurnal activity and ecofriendly management: The melon weevil is a serious emerging pest of Luffa crops. About 70–80 percent fruits and 30 percent shoots are damaged by this weevil. 
  • Coordinating and monitoring of breeder seed production at national level under AICRP on Vegetable Crops and involved in seed production of vegetables seeds at the Institute level.
  • Looking after the work of  DUS Testing of vegetable crops, a Central Sector Scheme of PPV&FRA, New Delhi for protection of IPR issues of candidate varieties.
Patents, Technology, Methodology, Genetic Stock, Variety, etc.:: 

A. Variety/Hybrid Developed (14): 

Out of 14 varieties 05 varieties (3 OP & 2 hybrid) were identified by all India Coordinated Research Project on Vegetable Crops during different years and released & notified by the Central Varietal Release Committee on Horticultural crops.  Eight  varieties (7 OPs & 2 hybrids) were identified by UP state variety release committee & notified by the central variety release committee on horticultural crops (ref: notification of CVRC). One variety of long melon identified by AICRP on Vegetable Crops. As Principal Investigator  developed 5 varieties/hybrids in ridge gourd and sponge gourd and as Co-Principal Investigator 9 in bitter gourd, bottle gourd, pumpkin, pointed gourd and tomato.

Ridge Gourd variety:

1. Kashi Shivani: This variety has been released and notified by CVRC vide gazette notification no. S.O. 3636 (E), 06.12.2016 for cultivation in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand. Fruits green and cylindrica. Fruit weight 100-150 g, length 20-30 cm which may    increase upto 35-40 cm at bower. Plants bear 12-14 fruits. Yield potential 180-200 q/ha.

Sponge gourd variety/hybrid:

2. Kashi  Shreya (VRSG-194): It has bee has been released and notified by CVRC vide gazette notification no. S.O. 692(E) dated 05.02.2019 for cultivation in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand. Fruits of this variety are dark green and cylindrical. Fruit weight 100-150 g, length 20-25 cm and may increase on bower/trellis upto 32cm. Plants bear 12-14 fruits. Yield potential: 150-200 q/ha. Resistant to sponge gourd mosaic virus tolerant to Downey mildew and root knot Nematode under field condition.

3. Kashi  Rakshita (VRSGH-1): This hybrid has been released and notified by CVRC vide gazette notification no. S.O. 692(E) dated 05.02.2019 for cultivation in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand. Fruits are dark green and cylindrical.Fruit weight 100-150 g, 20-25cm and may increase on bower/trellis upto 30cm. Plants bear 12-14 fruits. Yield potential: 200-250 q/ha. Resistant to sponge gourd mosaic virus tolerant to Downey mildew and root knot Nematode under field condition.

4. Kashi  Jyoti: It has been released and notified by CVRC vide gazette notification no. S.O. 692(E) dated 05.02.2019  for cultivation in Uttar Pradesh. Fruits of this variety are light green and cylindrical. Fruit weight 100-125 g, length 18-22 cm. Plants bear 12-14 fruits.Yield potential: 150-200 q/ha. Resistant to sponge gourd mosaic virus tolerant to Downey mildew and root knot Nematode under field condition.

5. Kashi  Saumya (VRSGH-3): This hybrid has been released and notified by CVRC vide gazette notification no. S.O. 692(E) dated 05.02.2019  for cultivation in Uttar Pradesh. Fruits are dark green and cylindrical. Fruit weight 100-150 g, 20-25cm and may increase on bower/trellis up to 30cm. Plants bear 12-14 fruits. Yield potential: 200-250 q/ha. Suitable for rainy and summer season cultivation.

Long melon  variety:

6. VRSLM-16: Identified by AICRP (VC) vide proceeding of XXXIII AICRP (VC) group meeting held at ICAR-IIVR, Varanasi from 21st  – 24th May, 2015 for cultivation in Zone IV (Punjab, U.P., Bihar and Jharkhand). This is an early and high yielding variety developed through selection from local material. The average fruit length of VRSLM-16 is 30 cm and fruit weight 50-60gThe fruit is crispy, light green coloured with smooth prominent ridges. It has yield potential of 160-180 q/ha. 

Bitter  gourd  variety:

7. Kashi Mayuri: It has been released and notified by CVRC vide gazette notification no. S.O. 692(E) dated 05.02.2019  for cultivation in Uttar Pradesh. Medium maturity group, comparatively less seeded (10-15)/ fruit with uniform shape, size and higher shelf life suitable for distant market. High yield (19.56 t/ha). Variety is capable of fruiting during the hot summer (beyond 35̊C), tolerant to Anthracnose, Downey Mildew and Mosaic disease under field condition. 

Bottle gourd  variety:

8. Kashi Kirti: This variety has been released and notified by CVRC vide gazette notification no. S.O. 692(E) dated 05.02.2019  for cultivation in Uttar Pradesh. It is a winter fruited bottle gourd variety. The fruits   are small, green and  cylindrical shaped, (Gutka type). Fruit weight 800-900g. It is early maturing with resistant to Downey Mildew under field condition. High yield 375-425 q/ha. 

9. Kashi Kundal: It has been released and notified by CVRC vide gazette notification no. S.O. 692(E) dated 05.02.2019  for cultivation in Uttar Pradesh. It is a winter fruited bottle gourd variety. Attractive pear shaped green fruits and medium sized. Fruit weight 1.3-1.5 kg. Plants bear 12-14 fruits. Resistance to Downey Mildew under field condition. Suitable for July to September sowing. 

10. Kashi Kiran(VRBG-4): This has been released and notified by CVRC vide gazette notification no. S.O. 692(E) dated 05.02.2019  for cultivation in Uttar Pradesh. Fruits areattractive light green, round shape with smooth surface.Fruit weight 600-700g.Plants bear 13-14 fruits.Yield potential: 450-480q/ha. It is tolerant to Downey Mildew under field condition.

Pumpkin hybrid:

11. Kashi Shishir: This hybrid has been released and notified by CVRC vide gazette notification no. S.O. 692(E) dated 05.02.2019  for cultivation in Uttar Pradesh. Early maturing hybrid, fruit colour mottled green, shape flat round, size small (2-2.25kg) at edible maturity.First harvesting starts 58-62 days after sowing and maturity on 100-105 days after sowing. Yield potential is 400-450 q/ha & 385-400q/ha in rainy and summer season, respectively.

Pointed gourd  variety: 

12. Kashi Amulya: It has been released and notified by CVRC vide gazette notification no. S.O. 692(E) dated 05.02.2019 for cultivation in Uttar Pradesh.Fruits are attractive light green with sparsely distributed white stripes. The fruits are less seeded (5-8 seeds/fruit) and more fleshy. The fruits are tapper towards blossom end then the plant. It is suitable for stuffing and confectionary purpose. Fruits remain at harvetable maturity for longer period because of less number of seed/fruit. Fruits yield 200-220q/ha.

Tomato variety/hybrid: 

13. Kashi Abhimaan (VRTH-101): This hybrid has been released and notified by CVRC vide gazette notification no. S.O. 2363 (E), 04.10.2012for cultivation in Zone I (States: J&K, HP, Uttaranchal) and Zone IV (States: Punjab, UP, Bihar, and Jharkand). It is a determinate tomato hybrid.Fruits are deep red in colour.Fruit weight 75 – 95g.Total soluble solids content4.2 - 4.6 Brix.The fruits are firm (pericarp thickness of 0.6cm) and therefore are ideal for long distance transportation.Hybrid carries Ty-2 gene that confers moderate resistance to tomato leaf curl virus disease. Average yield potential of this hybrid is 75-80 t/ha.

14. Kashi Aman(VRT-0801): It has been released and notified by CVRC vide gazette notification no. S.O. 261 (E), 16.01.2018for cultivation in Zone IV (States: Punjab, UP, Bihar, and Jharkand).  It is a determinate tomato variety.Fruits are red in colour.The fruits of this variety are round and firm with a pericarp thickness of 0.52-0.57cm.Fruit weight 80-110 g with 3-4 locules.Total soluble solids content4.6 Brix.Variety carrying an allele of Ty-3 and has high level of resistance to both monopartite and bipartite viruses. Yield potential: 50-60 ton/ha.

B. TECHNOLOGIES DEVELOPED (4)

1. Pre-emergence application of pendamethalin @ 0.75 kg ai/ha followed by  one hand weeding  at 40DAS is the best treatment for weed control in pea cv. Kashi Udai as it gives the highest B:C ratio and highest seed yield at IIVR, Varanasi of agroclimatic zone-IV (Vegetable Science 43 (1):1-12:142-144).

2. Seed treatment with carbendazim @ 2g/kg seed + imidacloprid @ 2ml/kg seed + micronutrient mixture @ 20g/kg seed resulted in maximum germination and vigour indicec in chilli cv. Kashi Komal at IIVR, Varanasi (Proceeding of XXXIV Annual Group Meeting of AICRP-VC), page no. 28). 

3. Seed priming with K2HPO4 (0.01M) or GA3 (100ppm) for 24h improved germination (71%) and vigour of less viable brinjal cv. Kashi Taru seed at ICAR-IIVR, Varanasi (Proceeding of XXXV Annual Group Meeting of AICRP-VC), page no. 91). 

4. Sowing of Palak cv. All green during October with one cutting gave a significantly higher yield (15.66q/ha) along with highest seed quality at Varanasi.The BC ratio was also higher. Hence, it is recommended for agro-climatic condition of zone-IV (Proceeding of XXXVI Annual Group Meeting of AICRP-VC), page no. 100).

1. Awarded "Fellow of Indian Society of Horticultural Research & Development (ISHRD)" for the year 2017, Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India for the contribution in the field of  Horticulture during Progressive Horticulture Conclave (PHC) -  2019 on Futuristic Technologies in Horticulture. Organized by ISHRD and CISH, Lucknow at IISR, Lucknow from December, 8-10, 2019.

2. Awarded "Bioved Fellowship Award-2020 of Bioved Research Institute of Agriculture, Technology & Sciences, Prayagraj under the Bioved Research Society" for the contribution in the field of  Vegetable & Seed Science during 22nd Agricultural Scientists and Farmers’ Congress on “Post Harvest Technology and Management for empowering the rural society and employment generation”.  Organized by Bioved Research Institute of Agriculture, Technology & Sciences, Mohrab, Shringverpur, Prayagraj from 22-23 February, 2020.
