International Women’s Day Celebration at ICAR-Indian Institute of Vegetable Research, Varanasi

As per the direction of the ICAR, the ‘International Women’s Day’ was celebrated at ICAR-Indian Institute of Vegetable Research, Varanasi on 8th March 2021. About 50 women farmers from the neighbouring villages joined the event. In addition, all the scientist, SRF and young professional of the institute also attended the event. All the participants attended the event through the virtual mode being held at ICAR, Headquarter, New Delhi from 10.30 am to 12.05 pm in the committee hall of the institute. The programmes at ICAR-IIVR, was held from 12.05 pm to 1.30 pm, and mainly lead by the women scientist of the IIVR, Jyoti Devi, Swati Sharma, Shweta Kumari and Vijiya Rani. On the occasions, awareness lectures were delivered on ‘Gender equity’ and ‘Role of women in Indian Agriculture’. The women farmers were motivated for their active participation in the agricultural sector, rural institutions and community life Three women farmers namely, ‘Tara Devi’, ‘Phulva Devi’ and ‘Kiran’ were also awarded for their significant contribution in agriculture. One young professional of the institute ‘Madhu Kumari’ also recognized for her outstanding contribution (providing technical assistance) to the institution. The director of the institute, Dr. Jagdish Singh, also highlighted the problem of malnutrition prevalent among the Indian women and suggested the suitable measures to address the problem. The women farmers also interacted during the event and highlights their experiences while doing the farming at their homes, and how farming has changed their life in the better way.
